Next Generation

Hans Werner Henze would have turned 100 this year – an age that makes him the great-grandfather of the generation that will shape our media landscape in the future as Gen Z.

Despite the large age difference, there are surprising parallels between the avant-garde of yesterday and today: both are united by the question of how art can promote openness and dialogue in a world whose dynamics are increasingly reversing. How can participation be enabled in a fragmented society? And how can art and culture connect local communities?

Under the title ‘Young Critics’, seven young critics from the Cultural Journalism programme at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts are accompanying the productions of young international artists at this year's Munich Biennale.

Under the direction of SZ music editor Egbert Tholl, the students are reviewing and reporting on selected productions from the festival. You can read the results of their analyses and experiences here.

The master's programme, offered at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts in cooperation with the Bavarian Theatre Academy August Everding since autumn 2023, trains cultural journalists in all disciplines and media types. Further information can be found on the programme's website.
