By now it has been over forty years since the French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez attempted to free himself from the traditions of European opera with his oft-quoted statement, “Blow the opera houses up.” The explosion never came, but to this day people are still talking about the crisis in music theatre. It seems as if the development in the second half of the 20th century – from opera to anti-opera (Kagel) to anti-anti-opera (Ligeti) – has gone beyond infinity and therefore is once again at the beginning of its possibilities. The challenges that music theatre has to face – not the least of which is the cultural-economic aspect – have increased. And it is also the unleashing of its aesthetic potential that opens up perspectives for the future; for example, in the interplay of art and media. The Twelfth Munich Biennale would like to encounter these approaches in theory and in practice as a prominent experimental field of contemporary music theatre. A space for reflection on this theme is From Another View in the sense of crossing a cultural, psychological, or even poetic border, and within this spotlight an inquiry into music theater will take place in regard to its current artistic relevance.
